Book Overview

The "Basic Pattern Making: Women's Wear" book comes in 2 editions: Metric and Imperial. Each edition is either in Full Color or in Black & White. The Metric version has all measurements in centimeters, and the Imperial version has measurements in inches. The books are exactly the same, so just buy the one with your prefer unit.

Note that pattern making requires some simple math. You can even do it without a calculator in the METRIC version. However, in the imperial version, the math is much more complicated. This is due to the inch unit being divided into 16 equal parts and it is often notated in fractions.

Math with Fractions

If you are not comfortable doing math that involve fractions, below is a guide to help you. If you still don’t feel comfortable, then switching to metric system may be the best option.

Example 1:

33½  ÷ 4 +   ⅜      = ?	1. First convert all numbers to decimal, use table 1
33.5 ÷ 4 + 0.375  = 8.75	2. Do the math, use a calculator
8.75 = 8¾	3. Convert the decimal back into fraction, using the closest match on table 1

Example 2: This compares the same math problem using metric unit versus imperial unit. 35 7/16 in. is equivalent to 90 cm.

You can create and design many types of garments based on the foundation learned in this book. For example, creating a shirt pattern, you can choose from the bodice style, sleeves, and neckline as depicted below. Because this book teaches the basic and all patterns after are modification of the same basic pattern, you do not have to re-draw the pattern every time you want to make a new garment.
